Syria, UNHCR Cooperate to Protect Women, Children against Violence

DAMASCUS- Minister of Social Affairs Kinda al-Shammat has stressed the importance of the ministry’s cooperation with the United Nations Higher Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in the domain of protecting civilians, particularly women, children and the disabled, against all forms of violence and away from politicization.

During her meeting with a UNHCR delegation on Sunday, al-Shammat said the ministry is keen to cooperate with the UN commission to implement programs dealing with women, the major victims of violence in the areas under the control of armed terrorist groups in Syria.

She pointed out that protecting women, children and the disabled, within the framework of the ministry’s humanitarian response plan for this year will be a top priority.

She stressed the need to build the abilities of civil society associations in this respect and to enhance women’s role in national reconciliation and peace-making.

For its part, the UNHCR delegation expressed the UN organization’s readiness to provide all forms of support to guarantee the protection of children and women under current circumstances.
