Arab Writers Union in Syria announces the establishment of the Arab Mashreq Writers Union

The establishment of the Arab Mashreq Writers Union that consists of writers from Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine, was announced at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union, with the aim of strengthening cultural cooperation between these countries, fortifying cultural identity and belonging, and confronting normalization.

The announcement came during a meeting that brought together the President of the Arab Writers Union in Syria Muhammad Al-Hourani, the President of the Jordanian Writers Association Akram Al-Zoubi, the President of the General Union of Writers in Iraq Ali Al-Fawaz, the Secretary-General of the Palestinian Writers and Murad Al-Sudani and the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Writers Union Ahmed Nazzal.

In a founding statement, the Arab intellectuals said that this union is part of the General Union of Arab Writers, and the members of these unions and partner associations are considered members of it by definition.

The establishment of the Arab Mashreq Writers Union aims to enhance joint work, to consolidate the culture of belonging, strengthen the comprehensive national cultural identity and enable it to carry out its moral duty away from political tensions. It also aims to work to consolidate historical, cultural and civilizational commonalities, preserve the tangible and intangible heritage, deepen the goals and meanings of the culture of resistance and reject all forms of normalization.

According to the founding statement, the Arab Mashreq Writers Union seeks to consolidate the presence of the Palestinian issue in culture, literature, and the arts, and to coordinate with friendly countries to confront the occupation, expose its practices against the Palestinian people, and invite members of the Union and specialists to write and document the history of Palestine.

The Union works to root and consolidate the culture of resistance against the Zionist occupier and terrorism in literature and arts.

One of the Union’s priorities is to support the restoration of the inalienable national rights of the Palestinian Arab people, mainly the right to self-determination and build their independent state, by enhancing its presence in social media as well as in educational, media and cultural programs.

The statement stressed the importance of embracing youth literary talents in partner unions and associations, ensuring their presence and participation in various cultural events, defending people’s freedoms and their civil and democratic rights.

The Union members meet periodically, at least once a year or whenever necessary, and will be accompanied by cultural events agreed upon by these members.
