A Russian-Chinese double veto against a US draft resolution that does not demand an end to the aggression on Gaza

Russia and China today vetoed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council put forward by the United States that does not demand an end to the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, and allows the occupation to continue killing Palestinians with impunity.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, stressed that the US draft resolution on Gaza is an attempt to make Israel get away with its crimes, pointing out that the text did not include any call for a ceasefire and the United States is trying to “sell a product” to the council using the word “necessary” in its resolution and “this is not enough” as the council must “demand a ceasefire”.

Nebenzia pointed out that the US administration is “deliberately misleading the international community,” considering that the draft resolution is just a manipulation of American voters through a false call for a ceasefire.

For his part, the Chinese delegate to the Security Council said that the US draft resolution evaded the most urgent issue of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, pointing out that the draft resolution remains “cloudy” and does not demand an immediate ceasefire stressing that his country demands an immediate ceasefire and stop the suffering of Palestinians.

The Algerian delegate to the UN Security Council, Amar Bendjama, said that the text of the US draft resolution allows the continued killing of civilians and lacks clear guarantees, pointing out that the council must be enabled to impose a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Bendjama  stressed that the American project did not mention the responsibility of “Israel” for the murder of Palestinians and did not live up to the required level.

After the meeting, the permanent representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, confirmed the rejection of the Israeli occupation plan to displace the Palestinian people from the Gaza Strip and its threats to invade Rafah and continue the genocide.

Mansour said: “We will spare no effort to stop the bloodshed in Gaza, to reconstruct it and to return the Palestinians to the homes they inhabited before 7 October, and we will demand during the ministerial meeting of the Security Council to facilitate Palestine’s admission as a permanent member of the United Nations.
