West-Brokered Draft Resolution on Humanitarian Situation in Syria Far from Reality

MOSCOW- A new draft resolution on humanitarian situation in Syria proposed by Western partners is far from reality, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.

 “The crisis is a very serious problem and it should be resolved on principles of international humanitarian law,” the minister noted, according to Itar Tass.

Lavrov said that the Geneva communiqué is a comprehensive document from which separate provisions cannot be taken out.

“The Syrian government, through head of the delegation, Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, stated that it is ready to discuss all provisions of the Geneva communique, literary one by one. You cannot take out one such provision from this communique, as opponents to the government are trying to do,” Lavrov said on Tuesday after talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtan Lamamra.

“The Geneva communique contains a comprehensive approach to be guided by,” he underlined.

Leak of information to western media on a UN Security Council resolution on Syria that is being prepared has been organized to exert pressure on Russia and China, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

 “If western media has written about this, this means authors of this resolution organised the information leak to exert pressure on Russia and China,” he said. “This is a two-move combination that is easily calculated.

Russia is prepared to consider a new resolution on Syria by the UТ Security Council, if it meets principles of international humanitarian law, Lavrov said.

 “We are prepared to consider this kind of text, which differs slightly from a U.N. Security Council statement of October 2, 2013,” the minister noted. “But we also believe that the U.N. Security Council should also focus on no less horrible aspect of Syrian crisis – growth of terrorism over ongoing conflict in Syria,” the Russian foreign minister added.
