The Syrian national football team lost to its Iranian counterpart on penalties 5-3 after the end of regular and extra time in a 1-1 draw, in the match that brought them together today at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in the round of 16 of the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar.
The Iranian team scored first at minute 34 of the match through a penalty kick by Mehdi Taremi. The Syrian team tied Iran at minutes 62 of the match through a penalty kick by Omar Khribin.
The two teams maintained the tie during the extra two halves and thet resorted to penalty shootouts that ended up in the Iranian team’s winning the match 5-3, a result that qualifies the Iranian team to the round of 8.
Syria qualified for the round of 16 after a draw with India and after coming among the best four teams that finished third in the group stage for Group B.
