Justice or Not

The honorable and noble position of South Africa regarding the human tragedy in the Gaza Strip is unlikely to be forgotten by all those downtrodden. It is a country that has suffered greatly from the scourges of racism and it was the first to volunteer and take upon itself the task of condemning the Israeli occupation before the International Court of Justice, on charges of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

South Africa is credited with daring to stop the occupation for the first time in history. This was an unprecedented historical achievement against the Israeli occupation.

The result was that court issued a package of orders requiring the Israeli entity to take measures to prevent and directly punish incitement to genocide in its war on the Gaza Strip. The president of the court, American Judge Joan Donoghue, said during her speech at last Friday’s session: “Israel must take all measures in its power to prevent Committing all acts within the scope of Article 2 of the Genocide Convention”.

This step constitutes a beacon of hope for subsequent measures that would lead to the isolation of the Israeli entity. It is unlikely that Palestinian rights will be restored by the international community, or by the countries of the West, which have shown, to this point, the collapse of their moral system despite massive pro Palestinian demonstrations in all European capitals and in the USA .

What did the International Court of Justice do? The president of the court said, “Israel must take all measures in its power to prevent the commission of all acts.”

However the resolution did not include a ceasefire and the temporary measures imposed on the Israeli entity will only be applied under a ceasefire, which is not included in the orders imposed by the court.

The occupation, which is strengthened by the West, knows only the language of force and brutality, and will not submit to any international resolutions that hinder its expansionist plans. Unfortunately, optimism about the decisions of the International Court is based on a vacuum.

Only the continuation of resistance and the steadfastness of the people of Gaza and the failure of the displacement project will force the occupation to stop its hand. The price is dear but freedom is dearer.
