Syria welcomes ICJ’s ruling on South Africa’s case against Israel

Syria has welcomed the order and provisional measures of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that impose on the Israeli occupation to take immediate measures to prevent the acts prohibited under the Genocide Convention, and to ensure that the urgent humanitarian needs of Gaza Strip are met immediately.

“The Syrian Arab Republic welcomes the International Court of Justice’s ruling, issued on January 26th, 2024, on South Africa’s genocide case against Israel”, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on Saturday.

The ruling is the beginning of a process to save the rules of the international law from the Israeli violations and to end Israel’s impunity from which this entity has benefited over the past decades to commit the most heinous crimes against the Palestinian people, the ministry clarified.

The ministry pointed out that Syria appreciates this ruling which orders Israel to take immediate temporary measures that protect the Palestinians, including to stop committing murders against the Palestinian people, harming them or subjecting them to tragic living conditions, and to provide urgent humanitarian needs of people in Gaza Strip.

“The Syrian Arab Republic stresses the need to mobilize and intensify Arab and international efforts within the United Nations, especially in the Security Council, to give binding force to the court’s ruling regarding the temporary measures it requested,” the ministry concluded.
