Sabbagh: Non-Aligned Movement countries need to strengthen their cooperation and restore their vital role to meet the aspirations of their peoples

Syria’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh has stressed that great challenges have been facing the security of the peoples of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries as well as the values and principles, on the basis of which the Non-Aligned Movement was established, which requires a renewed approach by the movement that gives impetus to joint action that guarantees giving rights to the oppressed peoples.

“Today, the countries of our movement need to strengthen cooperation among themselves, restore their historic and vital role on the international scene, and meet the aspirations of their peoples to get rid of all forms of Western hegemony, eliminate the threat of terrorism and achieve sustainable development goals, Sabbagh said in statement at NAM’s 19th summit.

“Syria affirms the need to reform the international institutions, including the Security Council, and to involve the movement’s members in this process so that the new international balances are taken into account and fair geographical representation is guaranteed to all member states,” he said.

Sabbagh pointed out that the Arab region is witnessing a new chapter of acts of aggression that “Israel” has been committing over decades against the people in the occupied Arab territories in Palestine, the Syrian Golan and South Lebanon. Over more than 100 days, the Israeli occupation has committed the most heinous war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip.

“Syria condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, and the blind and unlimited support provided by the US administration to the occupation authorities, including the umbrella of impunity. It calls on the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to assume its responsibilities and take action to oblige the occupation entity to stop killing the Palestinians,” Sabbagh clarified.

He voiced Syria’s support for the important step taken by South Africa to prosecute “Israel” for genocide before the International Court of Justice, stressing that Syria reaffirms its support for the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate rights.

Sabbagh reiterated Syria’s appreciation for the support of the countries of the movement for its right to end the Israeli occupation of the occupied Syrian Arab Golan and restore it completely to the line of June 4, 1967.

He pointed out that Syria hopes that countries of the movement will continue to support it in preventing repeated Israeli acts of aggression on its territories, the latest of which was the aggression that took place this morning and targeted a residential building in Damascus.
