Syrian Research Wins First Prize for Arab Food Security

A Syrian research paper in the field of leading national initiatives for the year 2023 by Dr. Nasser Taraf Ibrahim won the first prize for Arab food security.

The Union of Arab Scientific Research Councils, the Union of Arab universities and the Arab Organization for agricultural development at the National Research Center in Egypt honored Dr. Ibrahim for his research entitled” The Role of Remote Sensing in Monitoring the Stages of Wheat Growth to Support the Management of the Productive Process in Syria”.

Dr. Ibrahim explained in a statement to SANA that this honor is the culmination of his pioneering work, national initiatives and qualitative research over twenty years in the field of modeling and remote sensing applications for planning and managing the agricultural productive process in raising the efficiency of production of strategic crops, especially “wheat” in light of climate changes in dry and semi-dry areas, which prevail in the Arab region and integrally achieve a strategic stock to achieve self-sufficiency as one of the most important pillars of food security.‏

The award aims to support scientific research that can achieve transformative effects in food security, encourage leading national initiatives in achieving food security, supporting talented and creative people, encourage them to give, help researchers invest their research results and innovations and turn them into products, and introduce distinguished researchers working in the field of Arab food security.‏

Dr. Ibrahim, who is a research director at the General Authority for Remote Sensing, has obtained a patent entitled “A model for spectral prediction of wheat production from space images”. One of his research papers in 2016 entitled “design and modeling of spectral prediction algorithms for wheat production from multi-stage multispectral satellite image data” was awarded the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils Award for Outstanding Scientific Research in the field of remote sensing.
