The First Kidney Transplant at Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia

The medical, nursing and technical team specialized in kidney transplantation at Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia successfully performed the first kidney transplant in the hospital for a 37-year-old patient after months of preparation and coordination.

The director of the hospital, Dr. Louay Nadaf, explained in a statement to SANA that the operation is the first of its kind in the governorate and was conducted by a medical team of hospital cadres. Its success gives great hope to patients with chronic renal failure, who undergo dialysis sessions at least twice a week, in addition to reducing the financial burden as well as waiting and travel for patients, because the current transplant centers are located in Damascus.

In turn, the head of the Department of internal diseases and professor of Nephrology at the Faculty of human medicine at Tishreen University, Dr. Abdul Fattah Abbas, said that the role of the kidney specialist begins with preparing the patient and the donor and conducting a comprehensive medical examination to confirm the histological match, in addition to paying attention to the immunosuppression to avoid any rejection of the transplanted kidney. After the end of the operation, the patient remains under close and constant monitoring of the kidney doctors to check on the transplanted kidney and treat any complications that may happen.

Dr. Mohammed Sinan Mohammed, a urologist, noted that efforts had been made to carry out the operation in terms of the readiness of the medical staff and to secure the necessary requirements under the circumstances of the unjust blockade imposed on Syria, indicating that the hospital was able to secure them and the operation was successfully completed.

According to Dr. Iyad Hatoum, an anesthesiologist and intensive care specialist, who explained that anesthesia in such operations is not only to preserve the patient’s life, but also to preserve the function of the transplanted organ.

While the participation of Dr. Yasser Al-Saleh, a fifth-year studies doctor at Tishreen hospital, was from the beginning through preparing the patient, conducting the necessary consultations and analyzes, preparing the preoperative treatment and following up the patient after surgery, expressing his pride in this medical achievement, which would add practical value to the study doctors and the value of service to patients located in the central, coastal and northern region.
