Russian Foreign Ministry: Sending UN peacekeeping forces to Gaza is premature

The Russian Foreign Ministry considered today that the issue of sending United Nations peacekeeping forces to Gaza is premature, as long as the Zionist entity continues its aggression and brutal crimes against the Palestinian people.

Director of the Department of International Organizations in the Ministry, Pyotr Ilyichev, indicated, according to what was reported by Novosti Agency, that “various scenarios and ideas are being put forward to restore stability and security, especially in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including the deployment of peacekeeping forces under the auspices of the United Nations. It is too early to conduct a practical discussion of such initiatives”, especially with the continued Israeli aggression on Gaza.

Ilyichev expressed his country’s “regret that the Security Council is still unable to fulfill its direct mandate as the main body for maintaining international peace and security”.

He explained, “Washington’s position prevents any initiatives to stop the bloodshed and create conditions to provide humanitarian assistance that could limit in any way Israel’s freedom of action. Washington used its veto power twice against draft resolutions calling for a ceasefire”.
