Iran’s Rouhani: Geneva-2 Participants Should Contribute to Syrian Peace Efforts

DAVOS- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the participants in the Geneva-2 Peace Conference should “contribute to realising the peace aspirations in Syria,” IRNA News Agency reported on Thursday.

At the World Economic Forum currently underway in Davos the Iranian president said, “We’ve always said and say that the Syrian people thirsts for peace. The Syrian problem can’t be solved by force.”

“The fight against terrorism is the region’s common cause. The expansion of the activity of terrorists does not meet any interests,” he said.

Foreign terrorists, supporting armed groups in Syria should be pushed out of the country before talks between the “opposition” and government can take place and elections are held, the Iranian President clarified.

He said that after the bloodshed ends and terrorists are no longer in the country, “we have to pave the way for the opposition to sit around the table with the government.”

On the subject of elections, he said: “Whatever comes out of it, everyone should accept.”

Commenting on the Geneva agreements on Iran’s nuclear dossier, Rouhani said, “We intend to fulfill all obligations if our opponents do the same.”
