UN experts call for an immediate end to the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip

UN human rights experts have called for an immediate and permanent end to the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.

“The UN member states must mobilize their efforts and work collectively to save the Gaza Strip from mass destruction and mass deaths in order to preserve the reason for the existence of the United Nations,” the experts said in a statement today quoted by WAFA agency, stressing that the member states of the Security Council or the General Assembly, as appropriate, should act to press for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

The experts welcomed the letter of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the president of the Security Council to activate Article 99 of the UN Charter, which states that the secretary-general may alert the Security Council to any issue that he considers may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.

They expressed their full support to the secretary-general as he assumes greater leadership in efforts to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The experts expressed their concern about the dwindling humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip due to the shortage of basic supplies for the people of the stricken strip.

The Security Council will vote today on a draft resolution submitted by the Arab and Islamic groups calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the delivery of aid.
