Palestinian Foreign Ministry: We support Guterres’ initiative… Israeli incitement against him is political terrorism
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its support for the initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres which calls for holding a Security Council session in order to assume its responsibilities in achieving an immediate ceasefire in Gaza Strip, stressing that the Israeli incitement against the Secretary-General is political terrorism.
“We welcome Guterres’ initiative in calling for a Security Council session to assume its responsibilities for an immediate ceasefire against the backdrop of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, based on Article 99 of the United Nations Charter” The Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday
The statement added ” the foreign ministry consider it a very necessary step that is consistent with the assigned tasks.” The Council and the institutions of international legitimacy, and are consistent with the widespread international warnings about the repercussions of the humanitarian catastrophe against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a result of the genocidal war waged by Israel.
The Ministry strongly condemned the attack and incitement carried out by the occupation officials against the Secretary-General of the United Nations, explaining that it is political terrorism aimed at dissuading him from performing his role and carrying out his duties in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, international law and human rights principles.
The statement called on all countries to support Guterres’ initiative and to push the Security Council to fulfill its obligations and take a decision to cease fire.
The United Nations News website published yesterday that the Secretary-General of the United Nations sent a letter to the President of the Security Council in which he, for the first time since assuming office in 2017, invoked Article 99 of the United Nations Charter, which stipulates that the Secretary-General may alert the Security Council to any issue he deems appropriate. It may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.
In his message, Guterres warned of a complete collapse in the Strip, which has been subjected to Israeli aggression since last October 7, stressing the necessity of declaring a humanitarian ceasefire.
Guterres added: “We face a great danger of the collapse of the humanitarian system. The situation is rapidly deteriorating towards a catastrophe that may have irreversible consequences for the Palestinians and for peace and security in the region.”
“In the face of the serious risk of collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, I urge the Security Council to help avert a humanitarian catastrophe, and I call for the declaration of a humanitarian ceasefire.”Guterres twitted on X-platform
Following his call to stop the war on the Gaza Strip, the occupation launched a sharp attack on Guterres, again demanding his resignation.
