Syria rejectes the recent decision adopted by the states parties to the OPCW, says it violates international law

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has stressed its rejection of the decision adopted on November 30 during the 28th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

In a statement on Sunday, the ministry said that the decision, titled “Addressing the Threat from Chemical Weapons Use and the Threat of Future Use”, represents a deviation from the framework of the agreement that regulates the work of the Organization, and it contains procedures that violate the texts and provisions of the International Law and the Charter of the United Nations.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the ministry said that “the decision represents only the isolationist positions of Western countries and it aims at achieving what these countries could not achieve through the attacks and failed political campaigns against Syria over the past 12 years, including their support for terrorism and the fabrication of incidents of chemical weapons use that never existed.”.

The Ministry noted that the vote of 69 out of 193 states party to the Convention in favor of the draft decision exposes the deception of Western countries, and reflects Western hatred against a developing country, and the rejection of the vast majority of states parties of this decision.

The statement added that Syria holds Western countries responsible for the negative effects that such decisions could have on the present and future of the OPCW.

The Ministry added that Syria urges the Technical Secretariat to adhere to the provisions of the Convention, to carry out a thorough review of its approach and reports and not to become an instrument serving the objectives and interests of a group of countries.
