Spanish Prime Minister: Recognizing an independent Palestinian state is in Europe’s interest

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has considered that it is in the interest of the European Union to recognize an independent Palestinian state, stressing that the establishment of this state is a necessary step to put an end to the conflict and achieve stability in the region.
Agence France-Presse quoted the Socialist Prime Minister as saying in an interview with the Spanish station RETV on Thursday: “It is clear that we have to find a political solution to end this crisis, and this solution includes, in my opinion, recognition of the Palestinian state,” explaining that this recognition “is in the interest of Europe for a moral reason, because what we see in Gaza is unacceptable, and also for a geopolitical reason, as it contributes to the stability of the region.”
Sanchez, who has been recently re-elected to head the government for four years, pledged in his inauguration speech to work in Europe and Spain to recognize the Palestinian state, and he has not ruled out the possibility of Madrid recognizing this state individually if an agreement has not been reached within the European Union.
