Attiya: Israeli crimes in Gaza prove the double standards of the countries that have diverted the OPCW from its goals

Syria’s permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the Hague, Ambassador Milad Attiya, has confirmed that the war of genocide being committed by the Zionist entity in Gaza Strip are a blatant example of the colonial policies and double standards of the United States and some Western countries.

He pointed out  that these same countries have diverted the OPCW from the  goals for which it was established, through making false accusations to target Syria and Russia.

The Syrian ambassador explained in a statement on Wednesday  before the 28th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) that the US  and some Western countries were a major partner in the barbaric, bloody Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip, and in the war of ethnic cleansing there.

He indicated that this aggression led to the martyrdom of about 15,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were children and women, in addition to the   displacement of hundreds of thousands.

Attiya referred to the US role in encouraging Israel and providing cover for it at the United Nations and the Security Council, as well as in supplying it with thousands of tons of ammunition and military equipment, and allocating financial support of more than 14 billion US dollars to finance the Israeli war of annihilation.

The Syrian ambassador  stressed that Syria supports Palestine’s request that it submitted to the  Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons organization to investigate the Israeli occupation’s use of internationally prohibited weapons, including toxic substances such as chemicals during its aggression against Gaza Strip, indicating that the Israeli entity, which possesses all types of weapons of mass destruction and refuses to implement UN resolutions related to nuclear non-proliferation, practices deception as usual to cover up its  crimes.

Attiya pointed out that the universality of the Chemical Weapons Convention will not be achieved without obligating Israel to join the convention and the rest of the international agreements related to the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Hewent on to say that the statement of one of the ministers of the Israeli occupation government about the possibility of striking Gaza with a nuclear weapon confirms what Israel has always done to conceal the fact that it possesses this weapon against international control systems, which poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the region.

The Syrian ambassador said: “During the past ten years (2013-2023), Syria was subjected to an unprecedented campaign of false accusations by Western countries, represented by accusing Syria  of not cooperating with the organization for the prohibition of Chemical Weapons . These accusations are completely baseless, and their main goal is to put more pressure on Syria and escalate direct and indirect aggression on the country.”

Attiya called for strengthening international efforts by non-state actors to confront chemical terrorism which poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the States Parties to the CWC, pointing out that Syria has been informing the OPCW and the Security Council of the continuation of terrorist groups and the terrorist organization (White Helmets) in preparing theaters for using Chemical weapons  supported by  some Western countries, especially in the countryside of Idlib, Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and Lattakia governorates.

He added  “In this context, Syria confirms that the United States and some Western countries have unequivocally violated what was provided  in Paragraph 18 of Security Council Resolution 2118, which affirmed that all member states must refrain from providing any form of support for non-State actors that attempt to develop, acquire, manufacture, possess, transfer or use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and their means of delivery”

He called  on all member states, in particular the member states neighboring the Syrian Arab Republic, to inform the Security Council immediately about any violations of this paragraph.

The Syrian ambassador pointed out that some Western countries provide all kinds of facilities, support and cover for terrorist groups in Syria in clear violation of all Security Council resolutions related to combating terrorism, and Security Council Resolution No. 2118, stressing  that the continuation of this wrong and dangerous approach by Western countries will undermine the work of the OPCW.

He affirmed the need that the decisions taken by the OPCW organization to be means that contribute to achieving the collective goal of eliminating chemical weapons and preventing their use.

Attiya pointed out that the United States and its allies, led by the European Union, continue to use the policy of economic terrorism against many countries, including Syria, by imposing unilateral coercive measures in clear violation of what is stipulated in Article Eleven of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Charter of the United Nations, and the principles and rules of international law.

He referred to  the catastrophic impacts of these coercive measdures on  the Syrian people, stressing  that the main goal of these unilateral coercive measures are  political blackmail and putting pressure on the Syrian people.

The activities of the 28th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention began on Tuesday and they are due to last until the first of December, with the participation of 193 states members of the  Convention,  in addition to many international agencies, the private chemical industries complex, and non-governmental organizations.
