Restoration work begins in the Burlap Market in the Old City of Aleppo

The Syria Trust for Development, in cooperation with the Aleppo Governorate, City Council and the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, began restoration work in the burlap market in the old city of Aleppo, which connects Al Hebal market( rope market) and the pistachio square, and includes 48 stone shops that  used to sell various types of threads and fabrics.

The Director of the Communities Unit at the Syrian Secretariat for Development in the Old Aleppo Minaret, Ahmed Kubba, explained in a statement to SANA that the role of the Secretariat in the projects implemented in the Old City within the straight street markets and its branches include three areas, including (the community field), by communicating with merchants or their agents and inviting them to attend meetings. Committees were formed in coordination with the Aleppo Chamber of Commerce to undertake the tasks of communicating with store owners to hold meetings or remove doors, such as the burlap market.

The second field is (legal support), where the Legal Response Program works to secure all necessary documents in the market for free, and the third field is (economic), through which support is provided by granting interest-free loans.

From Diyari Company, which is executing the restoration work, engineer Noura Bitar stated that the work included the market axis, restoring the stone facades that were damaged as a result of the years of terrorist war on Syria and the earthquake disaster, explaining that the damaged stones should be replaced with sparkles and arches and parts of them will be restored, limestone paving work will be carried out, all stones will be lined, and the building will be restored to its original state while preserving the urban identity of the markets.

Supervising Engineer Sondos Shehadeh explained that the restoration work will focus on the axis of the market, and will be carried out by trained local cadres who are working at a high pace to complete it before the end of this year.
