New York (ST) – The ambassador and permanent representative of Iran to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, affirmed that Iran considers the Syrian Golan an integral part of Syria.
Iran News Agency quoted Iravani as saying at a meeting of the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on the issue of measures and settlement construction operations affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs in the occupied territories: “Iran strongly condemns the Israeli attacks on Syria, which led to the martyrdom and injury of Syrian citizens. He added that Israel’s decision to impose its laws and jurisdiction and sovereignty on the occupied Syrian Golan is void and has no international legal implications.
Regarding the presence of the American occupation forces on Syrian territory, Iravani announced through letters to the UN Secretary General António Guterres: ” The Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations has repeatedly expressed strong opposition to the continued illegal presence of US military forces on Syrian territory, viewing it as a clear violation of international law and a flagrant disregard for Syria’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence.”
“The United States must stop its unlawful actions, end its illegal occupation, and adhere to its international legal obligations, including the pertinent resolutions of the Security Council, which require all Member States to uphold and respect Syria’s national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. This is in the interest of regional and international peace and security”, he added.
In a related context, Iravani referred to Iran’s continued support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against the occupation and their inalienable right to self-determination through the formation of the independent Palestinian state on the entire land of Palestine with Al-Quds as its capital.
“The deteriorating situation in Gaza Strip makes it necessary to achieve a ceasefire as a priority and take immediate and comprehensive action to facilitate the reconstruction of this area”, he said.
Iravani stressed that during the past month, the Israeli occupation forces bombed Gaza Strip and used advanced weapons in the most brutal and barbaric ways, killing more than ten thousand Palestinian civilians and wounding more than twenty-five thousand others. The Israeli army also destroyed thousands of homes and residential buildings, in addition to protected buildings such as refugee camps, schools, hospitals, and buildings housing journalists.
He indicated that the illegal and inhumane land and sea blockade imposed on Gaza, which is the largest open-air prison in the world and the most densely populated, continues to negatively affect the lives of the entire Palestinian civilian population in Gaza.
He pointed out that the General Assembly, as the collective conscience of the international community, bears the responsibility and duty to condemn Israeli aggression and ethnic cleansing, and should also take the necessary measures to hold Israel accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“The use or even the mere threat of nuclear weapons, irrespective of the circumstances or the responsible party, constitutes a flagrant violation not only of international law but also of the fundamental principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, especially Article 2(4). Furthermore, what makes this situation even more alarming is when such dire threats originate from the authorities of an occupying entity, which has displayed a consistent disregard for international humanitarian law and is continuing its unabated heinous crimes against the Palestinian people, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity and even using starvation as a method of warfare in the besieged Gaza Strip”, he said.
