The Committee of Presidents of the UN General Assembly calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Seoul (ST) – The Committee of Presidents of the UN General Assembly, which includes 22 former presidents of the Assembly, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for allowing humanitarian aid, water, food and medicines to reach its residents.

It stressed that implementing a truce would save lives, prevent the escalation of war, and open the door to achieve a permanent settlement of the conflict in the Middle East.

The former President of the General Assembly of Czech nationality Jan Kavan talked about the deliberations of the committee that took place in Seoul, South Korea, saying that the former presidents affirmed that any political settlement must guarantee the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

They stressed the need for the UN not to keep silent regarding what is happening in Gaza, for its mission and duty is to take initiative to reach a truce and contribute with other parties to adhering to it.

The committee indicated that peace cannot be achieved by increasing the number of victims, and that the future arrangement of the world must be based on the detailed principles of the UN Charter and starting from commitment to international law.
