New York, (ST) – The Director of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York, Craig Mokheiber wrote a clear resignation letter to the Secretary-General of the international organization, in which he affirmed that the United States and European countries are complicit in the crimes of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinians.
The letter by Mokheiber contained a strong protest and harsh criticism of the failure of the United Nations to perform its assigned mission.
Mokheiber, who announced his resignation from his position at the United Nations in protest against Israel’s continuing crimes in Gaza Strip yesterday, said in his letter that was leaked to the media, including the British newspaper the Guardian: “We must realize that the United States and other Western powers are real parties to the conflict and are complicit with (Israel) in violating Palestinian rights, and we must engage them on this basis.
Mokheiber added: “genocide is unfolding before our eyes in Gaza and it seems that the United Nations is unable to stop it. He added it has become clear that the international community has failed in performing its duty, preventing the occurrence of these atrocities, protecting the weak and holding the perpetrators accountable.
In his letter, Mokheiber spoke about his work as a human rights lawyer, stressing that the current mass slaughter of the Palestinian people is rooted in a settler-colonial ideology in (Israel) and has been continuing for decades. He said that the systematic practices of persecution and ethnic cleansing carried out by (Israel) in addition to statements the leaders of the Israeli occupation entity leave no room for debate or doubt.
Mokheiber explained that civilian homes, schools, churches, mosques and medical institutions in Gaza are being subjected to indiscriminate attacks by the occupation forces, and hundreds of civilians are being detained in the West Bank, including occupied Al-Quds (Jerusalem), while the apartheid entity prevails throughout occupied Palestine.
Mokheiber’s resignation comes within the context of the growing state of dissatisfaction among officials at the level of international organizations or even in the United States, where two officials in the US State Department had previously announced their resignation due to blind American support for the crimes of the Israeli occupation in Gaza.
Human Rights Watch accused the United States and Western countries of hypocrisy and silence regarding what it described as “brutal disregard” for the lives of civilians in Gaza Strip and their position in support of Israel’s crimes against the Palestinians.
