Kaag : Syria’s cooperation with UN to Destroy Chemical Weapons is Constructive

NEWYORK,(ST)_ Special Coordinator of the UN joint mission and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in Syria Sigrid Kaag described the Syrian government’s cooperation with the mission as constructive, stressing that meeting the deadline set at the end of next June for the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria is possible .

The UN website quoted Kaag as saying in a news conference yesterday after closed consultations during which the UN Security Council listened to her testimony on recent developments with regard to the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria , ” We have to remember that Syria is in a state of war and the security situation can be changing on a daily basis ,” noting the ” logistical challenges that led to the recent delays in obtaining the necessary equipment and roads closed because of to snow .”

” The transfer of the first shipments of chemicals to the port of Latakia for destruction outside Syria is a very important step because it represents the beginning of the process of destruction abroad ,” Kaag said adding that ” some chemicals will be destroyed aboard a U.S. ship and the rest of the material to other countries to get rid of them.”

By the end of last December Kaag confirmed that ” commitment to the process of the transfer of chemical weapons to the outside Syria is still on ” describing the process, ” as complex that requires keeping up military to secure convoys and a lot of preparation to complete the trip properly and protect the chemical elements and load on trucks . “

The joint mission of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons announced yesterday the transfer of chemicals from two sites to the port of Latakia to check them out and load them aboard a Danish ship,
