UN Security Council rejects a Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza

New York, (ST) – The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday rejected the Russian draft resolution that proposed a solution to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

According to RIA Novosti, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Japan voted against the Russian draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, while Russia, China, the UAE, Gabon and Mozambique supported the draft, and Albania, Brazil, Ghana, Malta, Switzerland and Ecuador abstained from voting.

The Russian draft resolution included a call from the Security Council for an immediate, sustainable and fully compliant ceasefire in the Middle East.

The project also strongly condemns violence and military actions against peaceful civilians. It calls for the safe release of all hostages, in addition to providing and expanding the delivery of humanitarian assistance without obstacles, and providing conditions for the evacuation of civilians and the wounded.

The Russian mission to the United Nations also included amendments to its draft resolution to condemn the Israeli attacks targeting Palestinians in Gaza Strip. It called for a ceasefire in light of the difficult situation of civilians there.

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia said after the vote: We regret that the Council has once again become an hostage of selfishness and bad intentions of the bloc of Western countries.

Nebenzia: The vote in the Security Council on Russia’s resolution on Gaza revealed who wants the war to continue

On the other hand, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Security Council, Vasily Nebenzia, said: The vote on the draft Russian humanitarian resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip showed who actually supports the truce and stopping the bombing of Gaza, and who wants the war to continue.

The RT website quoted Nebenzia as saying in statements after the Security Council rejected the Russian draft resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza: We believe that the vote of Security Council members is very important, as it clearly showed who is actually calling for an immediate truce and an end to the indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip, and providing Unconditional humanitarian assistance to civilians, and who continues to stubbornly obstruct the Council’s unified message and pursue narrow, selfish political goals.
