DAMASCUS, (ST)-Strengthening the national economy and developing its resources is the top objective of the Syrian government, Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi said.
He affirmed that opening economic channels with friendly countries, which have strong economies, and benefiting from their experiences is necessary to achieve this goal.
The premier, who was speaking on Wednesday during the Cabinet weekly session, affirmed the government’s keenness to enhance its economic cooperation and trade exchange with the BRICS states as well as other friendly countries, mainly Iran.
He also stressed that the government has spared no effort to meet the needs of national industry as to resume the production process and settle new industries that meet the needs of both the domestic and world markets.
Boosting the agricultural sector, giving special attention to food industries and recovering the sectors damaged by the armed terrorist groups’ acts, particularly the pharmaceutical and textile industries as well as the energy and oil sectors, are also among the goals of the government, according to al-Halqi.
He reiterated that the government is keen to meet the requirements of everyday life of the Syrian citizens to withstand the ongoing crisis.
He pointed out that the exchange rate of the Syrian pound is stable and that practical steps are being taken to gradually restore the normal value of the Syrian currency, thus the high prices of many imports will witness a decrease and the production process will be affected positively.
The prime minister hailed the efforts exerted by the service sector employees to fix the damage caused to the electricity networks nationwide as a result of the terrorist acts.
For his part, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem reviewed the political developments in the region and the world and the great achievements attained by the Syrian Arab Army to restore security and stability all over Syria.
Minister of Social Affairs Kinda al-Shammat affirmed that the concerned parties continue to ensure temporary housing centers and to provide relief and medical aid to the people displaced from the terrorism-hit city of Adra.
