Foreign Ministry: Syria has reservations about any phrases in the Arab League’s resolution that could be understood as equality between the Israeli occupier and the Palestinian people

Syria welcomed the content of the Arab League’s resolution at the conclusion of its extraordinary meeting at the level of foreign ministers. The resolution condemned the Israeli aggression against the brotherly Palestinian people, and called on “the Israeli entity” to implement its obligations in its capacity as the occupying party, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on Thursday.
The ministry added that Syria made reservations on any expressions that could be understood as an equality between the Israeli occupier and the Palestinian people who are living under occupation.
The ministry explained that the Arab League adopted a resolution at the conclusion of its extraordinary meeting at the level of foreign ministers at the League’s headquarters in Cairo on Wednesday the 11th of October 2023. The meeting focused on the recent Israeli aggression against Gaza Strip and the Palestinian people, and on means of taking political action so as to stop the Israeli aggression.
The meeting was held at the request of the State of Palestine and it enjoyed the support of Syria and a number of Arab countries.

The Foreign Ministry added: The resolution called for an immediate halt of the Israeli war on Gaza Strip. Furthermore, the resolution condemned the Israeli aggression and violations of the Palestinian people’s rights. The resolution stressed the necessity of lifting the siege on the Strip and allowing the immediate entry of humanitarian aid, food, and fuel into Gaza Strip. The Arab League stressed the need for “Israel” to stop depriving the Strip of water and electricity.

The Foreign Ministry stated that the resolution stressed the right of the Palestinian people to establish their state with AlQuds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Furthermore, the resolution warned against the Israeli attempts to displace the Palestinians outside their land, and emphasized the Arab Peace Initiative.

The Foreign Ministry continued: The resolution included at the same time “a call on all parties to exercise restraint,” and “called for the release of civilians and all prisoners and detainees.”

The Foreign Ministry explained that the Syrian Arab Republic welcomed, when the resolution was adopted, the condemnation of the Israeli aggression on the brotherly Palestinian people and the Israeli violations of Palestinian rights. Syria welcomed the Arab League demand for Israel to implement its obligations in its capacity as the occupying party and the Arab League’s demand to Israel to stop its criminal measures against the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian people.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that Syria, in return, had reservations about any expressions that could be understood as equality between the Israeli occupier and the Palestinian people living under occupation.

The Foreign Ministry indicated that the Syrian Arab Republic’s reservations on these aspects of the resolution were supported by many Arab countries including Algeria, Iraq, Libya, and Tunisia which all registered reservations in the same context.
