The exhibition of traditional heritage crafts opened in Bab Sharqi, Damascus

Damascus (ST): With the participation of more than 20 traditional crafts, the activities of the exhibition of traditional crafts, “The Craft Project,” which is held by the International Youth Chamber – Damascus in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry, began in Hanania Neighborhood in Old Damascus.

The exhibition, which is held in a Damascene home and lasts for three days, includes many craft products, such as traditional Damascene painting, engraving, hammering, copper embossing, glass painting, stained glass making, glassblowing, Damascene mosaic, rugs, brocade, stone mosaics, and handmade pottery.

In a statement to the media, the Minister of Industry, Dr. Abdul Qadir Joukhadar, stressed the Ministry’s keenness to support heritage crafts and professions, and to secure all their requirements in cooperation with the Ministries of Culture and Tourism and all concerned parties, in a way that contributes to enabling these crafts and preserving them from extinction.

Minister of Culture, Dr. Lubana Mshaweh, praised the Chamber’s initiative to hold this exhibition and focus on the role of young elements and their interest in Syrian heritage and preserving it as it represents part of the national identity, stressing the keenness to redouble efforts to advance and support traditional handicrafts and professions, and to overcome obstacles to the work of artisans.

In a statement to news correspondent, Dr. Khanum Marani, local president of the International Youth Chamber – Damascus 2023, indicated that the exhibition aims to shed light on the traditional heritage crafts that reflect the creativity of the Syrian craftsman, and work is underway to study the possibility of holding the exhibition in other governorates.

Dr. Rana Abu Rashid, director of the “Craft” project, indicated that the project aims to shed light on the country’s heritage and culture, revive ancient Damascene handicrafts, introduce them, and promote the products of its craftsmen within the local and international communities through young people taking field trips that introduce them to the craft, its mastery, its history, and its products.
