Lavrov: Current events have proven the necessity of establishing a Palestinian state

Moscow, (ST) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that the current events in the occupied Palestinian territories have proven that the status of the Palestinian issue cannot continue as it is. He pointed to the necessity of establishing a Palestinian state in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

Lavrov said in a statement during his talks with the Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Moscow today: We planned today to discuss all aspects of our cooperation, including upcoming meetings between Russia and members of the Arab League at the ministerial level, but the unprecedented current event and the confrontation between the Palestinians and the Israelis stressed once again that the current situation there is unviable, and requires amendments to our agenda.

Lavrov expressed confidence that Russia, the League of Arab States and all members of the League can and must contribute to solving the problems. He indicated Moscow’s readiness to do so with the Arab League and all other countries that show a sincere interest in establishing sustainable peace in the Middle East, including the State of Palestine, which the UN Security Council resolutions stipulates the need to establish it.
