WHO Official: We Face a negative media , the same as Syria

DAMASCUS,(ST)_ Participants in the scientific symposium held by the Ministry of Health yesterday in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and doctors association discussed measures taken by Syria to stop the spread of the polio virus and the role of pediatricians in educating families on the importance of the vaccine and its recurrence and ways to counter rumors that question the safety of the vaccine and its effectiveness.
Deputy Health Minister Dr. Osama Summak said that the aim of the seminar is to inform doctors about the ministry’s plan to combat polio virus in order contribute to educating mothers about the significance of the vaccine so as to immunize their children during the set six immunization campaigns .
Dr. Summak added that the attention paid by international organizations to stop the spread of polio in Syria is “due to the nature of the paralysis virus and its ability for rapid deployment,” stressing the need to take the vaccine only at health centers and mobile teams of the Ministry of Health to ensure its quality and effectiveness.
Dr. Christopher Maher ,WHO strategies official in support of operations and research on polio in Geneva stressed that Syria and its neighboring countries responded fast to fight polio which is a “positive indicator” noting that the organization in the process of evaluating the quality and collecting information about the campaigns launched by Syria, for later consideration.
“WHO is facing a negative media , the same as the Syrian Ministry of Health , and the best answer to that is to continue to work in the field and make a success to stop the polio virus,” , Dr. Maher said emphasizing WHO commitment to provide all the support and technical advice to Syrian government bodies and NGOs concerned with vaccination campaigns to ensure its access to every Syrian child whether inside or outside Syria.
