Sabbagh discusses with Vershinin and Francis the challenges facing Syria mainly in alleviating the suffering of its people

New York (ST): The head of the Syrian delegation to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, discussed with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Vershinin ways to strengthen the strategic relations that bind the two friendly countries and the importance of continuous coordination between them on various issues, especially developments related to the situation in Syria and the challenges it faces, especially those related to alleviating the human suffering of the Syrian people.

Ambassador Sabbagh indicated during the meeting that the views of both sides were in agreement regarding the necessity of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and the withdrawal of foreign forces present illegally on Syrian territory. He underlined the importance of continuing to combat terrorism until it is completely eliminated and the immediate lifting of the unilateral sanctions imposed on it. He stressed the importance of the meetings held in the Astana format to achieve stability and security in Syria.

In a related context, Ambassador Sabbagh congratulated the President of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis on assuming the presidency of the 78th session of the General Assembly, expressing Syria’s readiness to coordinate and cooperate with him on all issues related to his mandate.

Ambassador Sabbagh explained the challenges that Syria faces regarding achieving sustainable development goals, which are represented by the persistence of the remnants of terrorist hotspots, the catastrophic effects resulting from the continued illegal foreign presence on Syrian territory, and illegal unilateral coercive measures.
