Venezuela calls on UN to create a zone free of Western sanctions

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced that his country is proposing to the United Nations to establish a zone free of sanctions imposed by the West on other countries.

Media quoted Gil as saying in his speech before the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday: We propose the establishment of a zone free of unilateral coercive measures in which we can conduct financial transactions and interbank payments without risk of arbitrary impediments by Western countries.

Gil stressed that his country’s economy, despite the state of siege and plunder practiced by Western countries, has begun the recovery process with expected growth rates that are much higher than other countries in the region.

On the other hand, Gil said: The American government intends to militarize the conflict between Venezuela and Guyana over the disputed Essequibo region, by establishing a military base there.

He noted that the Venezuelan parliament approved a referendum to protect sovereign territories from American aggression, stressing his country’s commitment to realizing peace and its firm decision to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It is noteworthy that the causes of the border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana go back to the nineteenth century, and in 1899 an agreement was reached between Britain and Venezuela, according to which the borders between the two countries were determined by an international mediator. However, Guyana did not sign this agreement and continued to control the disputed areas.
