In his report submitted to the General Assembly on the work of the United Nations, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, pointed out that geopolitical tensions are rising, and that the world faces a set of existential threats, such as the climate crisis and technologies disrupting old systems, at a time when the world is characterized by a transitional phase.
“We are now rapidly moving toward a multipolar world,” Guterres said, noting that this is a positive thing in many respects.
For his part, General Assembly President Denis Francis explained that crises directly affect the lives of billions of people around the world, calling on member states to rebuild confidence and reignite global solidarity.
The general discussion includes a speech by Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, who will hold a number of bilateral meetings with a number of foreign ministers and United Nations officials and will also participate in the summits, activities and events that will be held in New York during the high-level week.
Meanwhile, Syria participated in the meeting of the “Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative” called by China on the sidelines of the General Assembly, which was chaired by the Chinese Vice President, and in which the heads of delegations of the group’s member states participated.
The meeting was devoted to reviewing the progress made in implementing the “Global Development Initiative,” which was presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping two years ago during the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
