UN warns of disease outbreaks in eastern Libya after Daniel

Tripoli, (ST) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya warned of the spread of diseases in the east of the country, and the occurrence of a second humanitarian crisis after the disaster that claimed the lives of thousands of people, as a result of Storm Daniel and the torrents and floods that accompanied it.

RT website quoted the mission as saying in a statement: The health situation is getting worse after the Libyan authorities reported the spread of diarrhea among people who were drinking contaminated water. It explained that it is particularly concerned about water pollution and the lack of sanitation services, following the collapse of two dams during the Mediterranean storm Daniel, which led to catastrophic results in the city of Derna on September 11th of this year.

The mission pointed to the response of nine United Nations agencies to the current crisis, as they work to prevent the spread of diseases after this disaster.

The mission also stressed that the World Health Organization sent 28 tons of medical supplies to the affected areas.

The Libyan Ministry of Health announced the day before yesterday the start of a vaccination program against diseases that usually occur after disasters such as the one that struck eastern Libya.
