Syria participates in the International Conference on Population and Development in Beirut

Beirut, (ST) – With the participation of Syria, the 6th Review of the International Population Conference kicked off on Wednesday, under the title “Challenges and Prospects Ten Years after the Cairo Declaration,” in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The participating Syrian delegation includes the Head of the Syrian Authority for Family and Population Affairs, Engineer Samar Al-Sibai, a number of members of the People’s Assembly, and representative of the Planning and International Cooperation Authority.

The conference sessions include discussions on human rights and equality issues in their multiple and intersecting forms, in addition to issues relating to reproductive health, environmental sustainability, population dynamics, and the priority of fulfilling the commitments of the Nairobi Population Summit.

Head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Engineer Samar Al-Sibai, head of the delegation, in her speech during the opening of the first plenary session of the conference, pointed to the progress made at the national level and the national experiences achieved in Syria with regard to population issues, and highlighted the challenges facing Syria in this regard, the success stories and the existing priorities.

The conference is scheduled to develop a set of key messages and recommendations emerging from the discussions that will be presented as a contribution to the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on programs and interventions related to assessing the status of the implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and its interconnection with the sustainable development agenda.

The work of the regional conference continues over two days and includes the presentation of the results of the regional review report and the messages emerging from the regional consultations.
