Putin, Jong Un: Enhancing relations between Russia and the DPRK is a basic priority

Moscow, (ST) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Democratic Korean counterpart, Kim Jong Un, confirmed that strengthening relations between the two countries is a basic priority for both sides.

Novosti news agency quoted Putin as saying at the beginning of his meeting with Kim at the Vostochny Space Airport in the Russian Amur Province on Tuesday: This meeting is being held at a special time, and it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Democratic Republic of Korea, as Moscow was the first country to officially recognize this republic.

During the meeting, Putin said that economic cooperation, humanitarian issues, and the situation in the region were discussed. He noted that the location of the meeting shows that Russia is proud of the achievements of its space sector.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea believes that Russia is fighting a sacred fight for its sovereignty and security and Pyongyang supports every decision Russian President Vladimir Putin makes, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said during talks with his Russian counterpart.

“Now, Russia is fighting a sacred fight to protect its state sovereignty and security while combating hegemonic forces that oppose Russia,” Kim said, adding that his visit came at “a special time.”

The North Korean leader expressed his full support to the Russian leadership. “We have always supported every decision that President Putin or the Russian government makes,” Kim said. According to him, Pyongyang is seeking to develop further its relationship with Moscow.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Democratic Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un today at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, located in the Russian Amur Province.

According to the RT website, a reception ceremony for Kim Jong Un took place with the participation of the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee of Russia and the DPRK, the Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Alexander Kozlov, and the Head of the State Protocol Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Igor Bogdashev.

Putin and Kim toured the base, where they listened to an explanation about the characteristics of the Angara space missile.
