Damascus, (ST) – During his meeting with the representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Syria, Dr. Mike Robson, the Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Engineer Hussein Makhlouf stressed the importance of cooperation between the two sides in the environmental field.
The two sides also discussed the means of supporting the livelihoods of local communities, and exchanging experiences.
Minister Makhlouf stated during the meeting held on the occasion of the end of Robson’s duties as the organization’s representative in Syria, that the Syrian people’s needs are accumulating due to 12 years of terrorist war, and the theft of oil and wheat by the American and Turkish occupations. He added also that there are other matters like climate changes and environmental deterioration that were accompanied by the difficulty of supplying Needs in various sectors due to the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed against Syria.
Makhlouf believed that the presence of many challenges in implementing environmental projects emphasizes the importance of partnership and work with the relevant ministries (water resources, agriculture and agrarian reform), in addition to the need to support United Nations organizations to implement these projects. He stressed the need for continued cooperation to support government efforts in the climate, environment, agriculture and water sectors
In this context, the Minister of Local Administration and Environment presented a project to strengthen the capacity of local communities in Eastern Ghouta, with the aim of confronting climate change and water shortages through integrated management of natural resources. “This matter will happen in cooperation in partnership with the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources, the Planning and International Cooperation Authority, and the local community, and in cooperation with FAO and the United Nations Human Settlements (Habitat) and Development Programs’, he added.
For his part, Robson expressed his thanks for the support provided to the organization during his five-year work in Syria. He referred to the importance of the projects implemented in cooperation with the Ministry, which are proceeding according to the specified timetable and well.
