Cairo (ST): With the participation of Syria, a meeting of officials of the anti-narcotics agencies in the countries of the first sub-working group was held in Cairo. The participants underlined the necessity of cooperation and exchange of information between the countries of the group and the importance of  confronting attempts to misuse commercial electronic platforms in the trafficking and promotion of narcotic substances.

At the conclusion of their meeting, the officials stressed the need to strengthen the capabilities of the control cadres to keep pace with the challenges and developments, in addition to activating training partnerships and scientific activities and benefiting from the specialized centers in the countries of the group.

During the meeting, which was attended by the Director of the Arab Bureau for Narcotics and Organized Crime Affairs, Syria warned against attempts to use drugs as one of the tools of targeted terrorism.

Major General Nidal Jreij, Director of the Narcotics Control Department at the Ministry of Interior, said in the ministry’s speech during the meeting: There is a close connection between terrorist groups and drug traffickers, as drugs have been used as one of the tools of targeted terrorism to which our country is exposed to and drug crimes have increased, pointing out that this matter has emerged through the terrorist gangs which exploit the geographical location of Syria as a transit country between drug-producing and drug-consuming countries.

Major General Jreige stressed that both terrorists and drug traffickers oppose the rule of the state and the law and operate in places where the rule of law does not reach them, and they are interested in an atmosphere of chaos prevailing to make it easier for them to carry out their activities.

Major General Jreige pointed out that Syria has been and continues to play an important and effective role in supporting the efforts of the international community to combat drugs by joining all international agreements related to combating drugs and participating in international and regional activities in this regard, stressing that Syria is always committed and effective in confronting this dangerous scourge in accordance with what is required and stipulated in international agreements in this regard, stressing Syria’s openness to cooperation with everyone.
