Hand-made products by Syrian rural women shine at the International Flower Show in Damascus

Rural Syrian women have a distinguished participation in the International Flower Show, currently held at Tishreen Park in Damacus, through their handicrafts made of crochet, silk, reeds, copper wires, pottery works, as well as a number of traditional rural foods.

Suzan Rustum, from the Directorate of Rural Women at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, told SANA that the directorate participates in the flower show through their handicrafts, hand-made works, natural silk products and rural chemical-free natural food products with the aim of supporting and empowering rural women and marketing their products.

According to Rustom, the participating women presented distinctive handicraft products, rugs from kilim thread, various items made from bamboo, burlap and wood. She noted that these products are the results of micro-sized enterprises.

Hiba Al-Dahab, a participant in the stand of the Ministry of Agriculture, said that her participation includes various kinds of pastries prepared on Saj (a curved baking oven) as an example her small project which she started in her city Al-Zabadani in Damascus countryside and then she expanded it to cover other areas.

Visitors to the flower show pointed out that the exhibits, presented in the stand dedicated to rural women, are distinguished by their precision, diversity, preservation of heritage and modern style of presentation that suits various tastes, and they also introduce the Syrian cuisine.

The activities of the Flower Show were opened on August 30 and they will continue until September 9.
