The area of land cultivated with yellow corn in Daraa Governorate during this summer season has reached 567 hectares.
Head of the plant production department in Daraa Agriculture Directorate, Eng. Wael Al-Ahmad, estimated the production of yellow corn for the summer harvest at 4,343 thousand tons, by calculating the average productivity of the land, which reaches 76.58 kilograms per hectare.
As for the condensed autumnal seed, Al-Ahmad indicated that cultivation is still continuing and the cultivated area has reached 510 hectares to date. The production estimates for condensed autumn yellow corn amount to 3,905 tons in the entire governorate.
Al-Ahmad indicated that the yellow corn that is harvested during this period of the year is grown in Daraa Governorate in summer and autumn seasons after the end of summer. Its cultivation spreads throughout the province, especially the western region, where farmers began to plant hybrid corn varieties with high productivity instead of the old ones, with the cultivation of forage varieties on a small scale.
A number of farmers in Daraa stressed the need to cooperate with the Directorate of Agriculture to combat pests that affect the yellow corn crop, with the intensification of field days to teach farmers how to manage the crop in terms of cultivation, irrigation, fertilization and control, in order to reach the highest production.
