Syria stresses the need for independent management of Biodiversity Fund

During the participation of the Syrian delegation in the meetings of the Seventh General Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Assistant Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Moataz Dohji, stressed the need to establish an independent mechanism from the members of the Global Environment Facility to manage the biodiversity fund that was approved and to prevent its politicization.

The meetings of the association were held in the Canadian city of Vancouver during the period from 22 to 26 August and included environmental representatives from 185 countries around the world.

The meetings discussed climate issues and a just transition towards clean energy, and mechanisms to help developing countries adapt to climate changes, and achieve sustainable development goals by 2030.

During the first session of the General Assembly, the establishment of the Biodiversity Fund was approved.

Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, CEO of the Global Environment Facility, said that the effects of climate change are amplifying, and accelerating the transition to clean energy has become necessary and urgent.

He indicated the importance of intensifying efforts to achieve sustainable development goals with regard to the issue of the environment and climate change.
