Syria takes part in the 7th GEF Assembly, calls for non-politicization of Biodiversity Fund

Vancouver, Canada – The Syrian delegation participating in the 7th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), held in the Canadian city of Vancouver between August 22 and 26, has stressed the need to establish an independent mechanism, that consists of the GEF members, to manage the Biodiversity Fund that has been established, and called for preventing the politicization of this fund.

Environmental representatives of 185 countries are taking part in the 7th GEF Assembly to discuss climate issues, fair transition towards clean energy, mechanisms to help developing countries adapt to climate change and ways to achieve Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The Global Biodiversity Framework Fund was launched during the event with the aim of providing funding for protecting species and ecosystems globally.

“The impacts of climate change are growing, and therefore, accelerating the transition to clean energy has become an urgent issue,” the CEO of the Global Environment Facility Carlos Manuel Rodriguez said, noting the importance of intensifying efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals with regard to the issue of the environment and climate change.

The Syrian delegation also took part in the round table debates that were held on the sidelines of the 7th GEF Assembly, to discuss climate change and biodiversity.
