“Damascus Soloists” band launches its first project to revive the Syriac Syrian music

Damascus (ST): The cultural heritage of Syriac music, which dates back to Befor Christ (BC), was transmitted orally from one generation to another and is still transmitted in the same way to this day.

Modern notation can accurately express the small melodic motifs and movements on which Syriac music relies.

Based on the importance of this musical heritage, the band (Damascus Soloists) was founded. Its main objective, according to the administrative and organizational supervisor of the academic band, Andre Makdisi, is to establish a small professional group with musical flexibility, to be a musical formation capable of performing different styles with and without singers, and to shed light on the beauty of mixing between traditional Arabic instruments and Western instruments, or what is known as classical.

In a statement, Makdisi stated that the band (Damascus Soloists) consists of distinguished academic musicians, each of them in his specialty, and they have participated with many local and international bands. The musiciana are accompanied by singers specialized in every musical style presented by the band.

Makdisi explained that the band’s 2023 program sheds light on the Syriac music that originated in Before Christ Syria, which was transmitted orally through generations, due to the absence of schools and educational institutions dealing with this musical style, an absence that poses a threat to this legacy that is still transmitted from generation to another through monks.

And, in order to achieve this program, the band, according to Makdisi, will launch a tour starting from Dar al-Assad for Culture and Arts in Damascus next Sunday, after which the band members will travel to perform a series of concerts in Russia.
