Iraq calls on Denmark to prevent repeated acts of insulting the Holy Quran

Baghdad, (ST) –  Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein called, during a telephone conversation with his Danish counterpart, Lars Lokke Rasmussen on Wednesday, for preventing repeated acts of insulting the Holy Quran and confronting such provocative actions.

Al-Sumaria News quoted the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying in a statement: Hussein called for confronting acts that offend Islam and the Holy Quran, as they incite violence and fuel hatred, racism and extremism, which cannot be included within the scope of freedoms.

Hussein renewed the Iraqi government’s condemnation and denunciation of the burning and desecration of a copy of the Holy Quran and the Iraqi flag in Denmark. He stressed that freedom of expression should not affect others’ freedoms, and such actions contradict human dignity and rights.

Hussein stressed respect for freedom of expression in accordance with constitutional and legal standards, in a way that does not constitute an offense to religions or freedom of belief.

For his part, Lokke Rasmussen expressed his country’s condemnation of this act. He stressed that the Danish government strongly rejects these actions and that it does not support or condone in any way anti-Islam views. He reiterated his country’s commitment to protecting the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen.
