Iran: Unilateral sanctions against Syria impede the improvement of the humanitarian and economic situation

Tehran, (ST) – The Permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations Amir Saeed Erwani affirmed that the continuation of imposing unilateral sanctions against Syria represents a major obstacle to improving the humanitarian and economic conditions. “The exacerbation of these conditions requires immediate and impartial assistance”, he added.

In a speech during a Security Council session on Monday concerning the political and humanitarian situation in Syria, the Iranian delegate stressed the need for humanitarian aid to Syria to focus on rebuilding infrastructure, reconstruction initiatives and improving the Syrian economy, which would create a suitable environment for the return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes.

Erwani said that the Syrian government granted the United Nations and its specialized agencies permission to use the Bab Al-Hawa crossing to deliver humanitarian aid to that area, for a period of six months, starting from July 13, stressing that respect for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity during this process is very important.

Erwani added that his country also continues to support the efforts of the Special Envoy and his active interaction with all parties to reach an end to the crisis in Syria. He reiterated his country’s commitment to cooperate with its partners in the Astana process.

Iran’s representative to the United Nations strongly condemned the aggressive actions and continuous attacks of the Israeli entity against Syria, especially against civilian infrastructure and the continued occupation of the Syrian Arab Golan. He said: The Security Council must decide on the aggressive activities and actions of the Israeli entity, which clearly contradict international laws and humanitarian law, violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, and destabilize the region.
