Iran renews its commitment to supporting Syria in overcoming the threats of terrorism and occupation

On July 20th, Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its support for the Syrian people and government in overcoming the threats of terrorism and foreign occupation, and in helping the Syrians rebuild their country and preserve its territorial integrity.

Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations Amir Said Irwani told the UN Security Council: “It is necessary to ensure that unintended humanitarian aid is sent to all Syrian regions, but it is extremely important to respect the sovereignty of Syria, its territorial integrity and national sovereignty during this process, and it must help send this assistance to rebuild the infrastructure and strengthen the Syrian economy, and support sustainable and long -term development.”

He expressed his country’s welcoming the sovereign decision of the Syrian government on the 13th of July 2023 to grant permission, for a period of six months, to the United Nations and specialized agencies to use the Bab Al -Hawa border crossing to deliver humanitarian aid to the needy in the northwestern region of Syria.

He pointed out that the continuation of the unilateral sanctions is an obstacle to improving the humanitarian and economic situation in Syria, as these illegal practices have negatively affected the economy and the lives of people and weakened the government’s ability to provide basic services, and therefore the abolition of these unfair measures is very important and an urgent need.

He called on Western countries to reconsider their approach and take another approach that fully respects the sovereignty and unity of Syria and avoids giving legitimacy to terrorist groups that hold millions of hostages and control their fate.
