Damascus, (ST)- Muhammad Nizar Jaweesh, a Syrian gifted craftsman in his fifties, designs beautiful wooden models made of reeds, using simple tools that reflect his creativity, artistic taste and his close link to nature.
His talent emerged at an early age through his practice of Arabic calligraphy, whose beauty captured his attention and encouraged him to develop his skills in this field through attending several training courses until he mastered Arabic calligraphy of all kinds.
In a later stage, Jaweesh moved to the designing of handicrafts and figures made of reeds and wood and to the painting of icons and expressive symbols.
Jaweesh is also interested in designing rural houses and churches of varying sizes using reeds. His artworks are distinguished by high accuracy in construction and application.
About using reeds, Jaweesh told SANA that dealing with this kind of material requires effort and patience, but it is lovely as it is added to the painting without any modifications to its natural color that doesn’t change with the passage of time as it doesn’t need chemical polishes as it enjoys varying golden color.
On how he obtains reeds, Jaweesh explained that he gets them from the villages of the Orantes Basin while roaming the reed fields, pointing out that he faced difficulties in obtaining reeds, due to the presence of snakes and reptiles in the places where reeds are grown, which requires extreme caution.
Jaweesh talked about the great support he received from his family and friends that prompted him to participate in a number of exhibitions in Homs governorate.
