People’s Assembly: The European Parliament’s report on the impact of coercive measures on Syria is a distortion of reality and facts

The People’s Assembly (Parliament) affirmed that the European Parliament is unfortunately still deviating from its approach towards the prevailing situation in Syria, from adopting any neutral stance independent of the offensive stances of a number of European governments, which was evident in its report issued last June on the impact of coercive measures on the humanitarian situation in Syria.

In a statement in response to the European report, the People’s Assembly stated that the aforementioned report included inaccuracies and distortion of reality and facts in a way that suits and justifies the policies of some Western governments that harm the interests of the Syrian people, especially the imposition of coercive measures and their disastrous effects on various groups.

The People’s Assembly pointed out that the so-called “exemptions and exceptions from these coercive measures for humanitarian purposes”, which the report referred to, are nothing but ink on paper and had no effect on the ground.

The People’s Assembly called on the European Parliament to adopt a new approach that is consistent with international law and purely humanitarian considerations away from the politicized approach of the governments of some European countries, by pressuring the European Union to lift all forms of coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people immediately and without any political conditions, especially those that target directly.

The People’s Assembly stressed the need to put pressure on the European Union to support efforts to implement recovery and reconstruction projects in Syria.

The People’s Assembly considered that it was unacceptable for the European Parliament to overlook what was indicated by many reports that part of the European aid had gone to armed groups classified as “terrorist” according to the lists of the Security Council, such as “ISIS” and “Jabhat al-Nusra” terrorists and other armed groups.

The People’s Assembly indicated that if the European Parliament wanted to be objective and impartial in its humanitarian approach, it would take a clear position condemning and rejecting the theft of energy and agricultural resources by the American occupation forces illegally present on Syrian soil and smuggling them out of the country.

At the end of its statement, the People’s Assembly reminded the European Parliament of its responsibility to put pressure on the European Union to stop its manipulation of the humanitarian file and stop bring used as a tool to achieve political goals of some countries.
