Foreign Ministers of NAM countries renew their call for ending the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan

At the conclusion of their meeting on Thursday in Baku, the capital of Azebaijan, the Foreign Ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Countries affirmed the need to respect the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of all countries and stressed their rejection of all forms of foreign interference in the internal affairs of these countries. They also reiterating the need to end the Israeli occupation of the occupied Syrian Golan.

The ministers issued Baku Declaration which provided for adherence to the Movement’s principles and goals which were established during the Bandung Conference in 1955 and Belgrade Conference in 1961 which aim at attaining a world where peace, justice, cooperation and welfare prevail.

They affirm the protection and promotion of the values of international law, the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations and the bases of multilateral international action.

The ministers renewed the NAM’s stance which calls for ending the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan and for the Israeli forces’ withdrawal to the June 4th, 1967 line in accordance with the Security Council Resolutions No. 242 and 338, reiterating the need to abide by the Resolution No. 497 which provides for considering all the measures taken by the Israeli occupation to change the legal demographic and administrative status of Golan as null and void and of no legal effect.

They expressed their countries’ support for the Palestinian cause, the relevant international legitimacy resolutions, the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital, and the right of return. They also condemned the escalation of the Israeli occupation and settler gangs through their deadly attacks on the Palestinians, the most recent of which is the attacks on the city of Jenin and its camp.

Moreover, the ministers condemned in the strongest terms the illegal unilateral coercive measures imposed on countries that are members of the Non-Aligned Movement, reiterating that such behavior blatantly violates the UN Charter and calling for lifting these measures immediately and unconditionally.

The ministers called for concerted efforts to face the current challenges, including terrorism, expansionist schemes, separatist agendas and cross border crimes. They also expressed rejection of contempt for religions, “Islamophobia”, hate speech and violence, condemning in this regard the burning of a Holy Quran copy in Sweden.

Common action to face climate change, economic crises, natural disasters, health emergency and the environmental degradation was also affirmed by the ministers.

The ministers called for continued work to establish a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East and for forcing Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and put its nuclear facilities under the safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
