Iraqi, Swedish foreign ministers discuss repercussions of burning the Holy Qur’an by an extremist in Stockholm

Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein and his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billstrom discussed during a phone conversation on Friday the repercussions of burning the Holy Qur’an by an extremist in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, on Wednesday, 6/28/2023.

Hussein expressed Iraq’s strong condemnation of this heinous act, which represents a grave insult to religious sanctities, inflames the feelings of Muslims around the world and constitutes a dangerous provocation for them.

“Burning a copy of the Holy Qur’an does not come within the context of freedom of expression, but rather to incite violence, sow hatred and support the phenomenon of Islamophobia,” Hussein said, calling on the Swedish government to “take the necessary measures against this person.”

On the first day of Edi Al-Adha, a Swedish extremist, under the protection of the Swedish authorities, tore out pages from the Quran, wiped them on his shoe and set some of them on fire.

The incident has sparked anger in all Arab and Islamic countries.
