Syria to host Asian pre-qualifying tournaments of Paris Olympic Games 2024

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has agreed to grant Syria the right to host the Asian pre-qualifying tournaments of Paris Olympic Games 2024. The tournaments are scheduled to kick off on the 12th of August, 2023 at Al-Faihaa Sport city in Damascus.

In a statement to SANA, Chairman of the Syrian Basketball Federation Tarif Koutrach said that the event will be held in Syria for the first time.

“It is an important event for the Syrian sport, as it comes after a long period of absence from hosting international tournaments, except for the participation in the World Cup qualifiers last year”, Koutrach clarified.

He stressed that the Asian Basketball Federation has chosen Damascus to host these qualifiers, pointing out that efforts are being intensified by all concerned parties to make the tournament a success and help boost the Syrian basketball sport.

According to the draw for the basketball competition qualifying for the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris, Syria has been placed in Group B along with Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

It is to be noted that Group A includes Chinese Taipei, South Korea, India and Bahrain, and that only one team out of the eight teams in the two groups will qualify to Paris Olympic Games which will take place from 26 July to 11 August, 2024.
