JCI Damascus holds Conference on Self-Employment

With the aim of enhancing self-employment sector in Syria, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) on Saturday held the Self-Employment Conference at Al-Cham Palace Hotel in Damascus. The conference was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour and the International Chamber of Commerce.

The sessions included interactive dialogue that highlighted the challenges and obstacles facing self-employment in addition to presenting the experiences of some youths working in this field.

Director of the NGOs at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Mahmoud Al-Kawwa clarified in a statement to SANA that self-employment is an opportunity to provide jobs at a wide scale through the use of information technology. He pointed out that it is necessary to protect self-employment workers through the existing legislations and laws in Syria or through joint work agreements with countries where companies that attract workers in this field are active.

Al-Kawwa noted the need to develop the strategies according to the needs of the job market and the orientation of the job market in Syria particularly after the terrorist war that has been imposed on the country.

For her part, Director of Social Affairs and Labor in Damascus Daleen Fahd said that the experiences presented at the conference were important and beneficial, as the labor market in Syria is rich in youth experiences and skills.

The JCI Vice President for Business and Entrepreneurship Asef Al-Najjar said that the Chamber’s goal is to highlight the businesses that help build a healthy labor market that is relatively close to the world market and to keep updated with all modern works in developing the tools used within the business world.

He pointed out that after studying the labor market in Syria it was found that 50% workers in the country are self-employed people who need to know the laws that protect their rights.
